Once the death is registered, the 'life admin' of notifying organisations can begin. This is simplified by the 'Tell Us Once' service.
A. Use the 'Tell Us Once' Service
This free government service, accessed using the reference number from the registrar, allows the informant to notify most government departments in one single action, either online or by phone.
B. Who 'Tell Us Once' Will Notify
The service can help save a significant amount of time and effort.
Organisations Notified by 'Tell Us Once'
- HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC): To deal with personal tax, child benefits, and tax credits.
- Department for Work and Pensions (DWP): To cancel benefits and entitlements, such as State Pension and Universal Credit.
- Passport Office: To cancel a British passport.
- Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA): To cancel a driving licence and remove the person as the keeper of up to 5 vehicles.
- Local Council: To cancel Housing Benefit, Council Tax Reduction, a Blue Badge, inform council housing services, and remove the person from the electoral register.
- Public Sector Pension Schemes: To stop payments for schemes such as the NHS, Armed Forces, and Teachers' pensions.
C. Who 'Tell Us Once' Will Not Notify (Your Checklist)
The 'Tell Us Once' service is highly effective but can create a false sense of completion. It does not contact any private or commercial organisations. The executor or family must notify these providers personally.
Organisations and Services to Notify Manually
- Financial: Banks, building societies, private pension providers, life insurance companies, mortgage providers, and credit card companies.
- Household: Utility companies (gas, water, electricity), phone, internet, and TV subscription providers.
- Property: Landlord, housing association, or council housing office.
- Personal: The person's employer or education provider.
- Mail: Royal Mail can be contacted for mail redirection.
- Digital: Social media accounts and email providers often have a process for memorialising or closing accounts.
